Katamba’s passion for tech is paying off

Many youths are making a career choice in technology. But Ronald Katamba is a standout techprenuer bringing innovative analytics solutions to agriculture.

The founder of Afrosoft is developing diagnostic software based on emerging technologies to detect diseases in plants and livestock — making it faster, cheaper and robust. He is aggressively working to demonstrate how technology brings many possibilities.

It was an unlikely start for Katamba. In 2011, Katamba quit his job at Techno Brain where he says he was decently paid. The graduate student of Information Technology at Makerere University, had participated in the Imagine Cup, a student developer competition.

It was here that he focused on building his own startup, Afrosoft IT Solutions, which is housed at Teacher’s House along Bombo Road in Kampala. Having been inspired by Microsoft, he replaced Micro- to create Afro-soft.

Drone firm in talks in Uganda on medical supply delivery deal

A drone service firm is in talks with the Ugandan government on a deal to deliver blood packages, drugs and medical equipment to public health facilities, an executive told Reuters on Friday.

A deal could see Uganda join a small number of other African countries, such as Ghana and Rwanda, that have deployed unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to help public health logistics.

Uganda's public hospitals often face shortages of essential supplies, such as blood, drugs, syringes, gauze and gloves, sometimes due to unreliable transport through the gridlocked capital or along poorly paved or dirt roads in the countryside.

Most smaller public health facilities in Ugandan do not have proper facilities to store blood and supplies often need to be transported across long distances in an emergency. Ugandan media have in the past reported deaths due to delayed blood deliveries.
