Can I travel to Tonga with my drone?

✅ Currently, there doesn't seem to be any restrictions on bringing drones within Tonga as long as your import is considered as legitimate (generally one drone per person).

🚨 This said, it seems that your drone needs to be registered in your country of origin, if not, you might be asked to register it from Nukuʻalofa airport for a fee between $50-$200 (according to online feedback gathered) & should happen by following these steps:

  1. Declare your drone upon arrival, it might be kept against a receipt but you get to keep the batteries & the remote in all cases.

  2. Head the following day to the customs' office located on the port (🕔 Mon-Fri 8 am - 5 pm); if you have registered your drone elsewhere, bring proof of it. If not, you might be asked to pay a registration fee up to $200.

💡 Note, you might be asked for insurance so you should have one.

🚨 Be aware of the airline you purchase to travel as some main ones will only accept your drone on-board if its batteries are detached & placed in a firecase during travel time. Most airlines will have a battery voltage limit based on the recommendation of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). You can find more info about a specific airline here.
