Guyana drone laws and rules

Recreational vs Commercial drone use in Guyana

Guyana does not differentiate much between commercial & recreational drone use - see our post to differentiate recreational vs commercial drone usage. Both are subject to registration & a code of conduct.

✅ In Guyana, drone regulations falls under the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA ) & they can also be contacted anytime via:

  • Email: it@gcaa-gy.org

  • Phone: (+592) 227 8111

Can I travel to Guyana with my drone?

✅ Currently, there doesn't seem to be any restrictions on bringing drones within Guyana as long as your import is considered as legitimate (generally one drone per person).

🚨 Be aware of the airline you purchase to travel as some main ones will only accept your drone on-board if its batteries are detached & placed in a firecase during travel time. Most airlines will have a battery voltage limit based on the recommendation of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). You can find more info about a specific airline here.

Where can I fly my drone in Guyana?

✅ We did not find an official fly zone map for drones in Guyana "If you have more information about this, please let us know anytime". Thankfully, app.airmap.io has listed all flight zones in a convenient way based on your flight intentions.

Recreational Drone use in Guyana

✅ Good things first, if you intend to fly a drone weighting less than 7 kg not carrying any equipment capable of collecting or transmitting information other than the flight path itself & within permitted zones you will not need to register your drone.

With this in mind, you will need to follow a few rules:

  • fly your drone at a maximum of 150 m max altitude or 500 m away from you.

  • fly a drone that weighs less than 7 kg (unlimited for commercial use)

  • fly always in sight and during day time

  • fly away from private property, unless you have the owner's permission

  • fly 50 m from people (30 m during take off/landing) & respect individuals' privacy.

  • fly 100 m away from vehicles in movement, roadways, railways

  • fly 150 m away from large crowds & congested areas.

  • give priority to all other categories of aircraft. If you see a plane or helicopter during your flight, land your drone immediately.

  • do not carry any recording instrument such as a camera or a microphone.

  • do not drop, tow or carry anything from your drone when flying

🚨 If you wish to fly outside any of the above rules, or undertake a flight for a commercial purpose, you will need to register your drone with the Civil Aviation Authority of Guyana.

How to register my drone in Guyana?

🚨 This is a compulsory step for any one wishing to fly a drone:

  • with a camera or any other recording device

  • heavier than 7 kg

  • for commercial purposes

✅ Guyana put in place an easy 1 step online process via this online form (scroll down to the bottom of the page). You will need to send information including:

  • your personal details

  • your drone's technical information

  • the full details of your flight path/zone

Commercial drone use in Guyana

🚨 In addition to the recreational use requirements, you will need to be onsite to require a drone operator's license to fly in Guyana. The application must include information such as a plan of intended operations, communication procedures, and maintenance program.

🌏 If you hold a foreign registration, you may be able to avoid the Guyana one but is only on the paper & we never heard any successful such case so check ahead.

🚨 You will need an insurance to cover your commercial drone activity in Guyana.

What do I risk for flying a drone illegally in the Guyana?

🚨 Non-conformity with the conditions of a Permit, operations outside of the drone rules mentioned above, or failure to comply with the conditions approved in an operations manual, shall lead to the suspension of the Permit & will be considered a breach of the Guyana Civil Aviation Regulations by the Civil Aviation Authority.
