Recreational vs commercial drone use in Sweden
Sweden does not differentiate much commercial & recreational drone uses. However both uses are subject to restrictions & a code of conduct. Additionally, depending on your drone's weight & where you want to fly your drone, different rules may apply.

Can I bring my drone to Sweden?
✅ Currently, there doesn't seem to be any restrictions on bringing drones within Sweden as long as your import is considered as legitimate (generally one drone per person).
🚨 Be aware of the airline you purchase to travel as some main ones will only accept your drone on-board if its batteries are detached & placed in a firecase during travel time. Most airlines will have a battery voltage limit based on the recommendation of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). You can find more info about a specific airline here.

Where can I fly my drone in Sweden?
✅ Sweden built a map for drone flight zones within the country. The map is organised in a 3 color scheme to help drone owners to fly responsibly and safely:
Red = Controlled Zones (do not fly without permission)
Black = Restricted Zones (50 m altitude max)
Orange = Traffic Information Zones (50 m altitude max & keep in constant communication with local air traffic management)

🦅🌲 Sweden protects its wonderful nature & wildlife (located mostly in the North of the country), in some reserves & national parks you will need a local permit to fly above and take awesome wild shots. You can find here an interactive map above Sweden's nature reserves and national parks. The most important parts of the map are represented in:
Dark Green = National Park
Light Green = Nature Reserve
Crossed Red & Blue = Natura2000 areas
🚨 You're allowed to fly at 10 m altitude maximum near the military zones of; Karlsborg, Linköping / Malmen, Linköping / SAAB, Luleå / Kallax, Ronneby, Såtenäs, Uppsala, Vidsel, Visby, Hagshult & Jokkmokk.
💡 Smart! Pack some spare drone batteries, you never know how close is the next power plug overseas. Also make sure you have a travel adaptor for Sweden.
Recreational & Commercial Drone use in Sweden
✅ Good things first, you will not need a license or permit to fly your drone in Sweden as long as you fly your drone within the permitted zones.
Within these, you will need to follow a few rules:
fly your drone at a maximum altitude of 120 m above the ground or 50 m within controlled zones & 10 m within military zones.
fly a drone that weights less than 7 kg (If heavier than 7 kg, you will need to register).
mark your drone with your full contact details.
fly your drone under a 2.4 or 5.8 GHz frequency only.
fly your drone always in sight (the use of 3D helmets is prohibited).
fly away from private property, animals, people & respect individuals' privacy.
fly at least 5 km away from airports & 1 km away from heliports. You must also give priority to all other categories of aircraft & if you see a plane or helicopter during your flight, land immediately your drone.
it is advised to subscribe to an insurance covering all risks.
do not fly near a natural disaster or somewhere emergencies will need to intervene.
if you're in an automatic flight mode, you must be able to take over control at any time.
if flying at night, your drone needs to be equipped with lights to be seen by all.
✅ If your drone weights more than 20 kg, you will need a third party insurance for a minimum amount of about 1 Million €. If the insurance policy does not refer to EC Regulation 785/2004, it should be noted that the insurance applies to drone flights.
✅ You can apply for a waiver on most of these rules via this link. Once completed, you can send you request to fb-uas@transportstyrelsen.se There is a cost which is based per quarter until the end of the current year (if you apply in July, you only pay for 6 months).
📸 if you wish to publish/use your photos or cameras for commercial or any other use than private, you should first ask permission to local authorities, you might do such via this link.
How to register my drone in Sweden?
✅ Any drone above 7 kg should be registered prior flying. Moreover, Swedish differentiates two weight categories above 7 kg;
between 7 - 25 kg: you must register via this online form 🕔 Allow 10 working days
above 25 kg: no online form exist but here's a template to help you out, once ready, you must send it to luftfart@transportstyrelsen.se
✅ Registrations are valid for life (of the drone).
What do I risk for flying a drone illegally in Sweden?
🚨 The amount & scope of the fine will depend on the nature & severity of your infraction. The judges will also evaluate if you intentionally committed the infraction.
