Recreational vs commercial drone use in Sweden

Sweden does not differentiate much commercial & recreational drone uses. However both uses are subject to restrictions & a code of conduct. Additionally, depending on your drone's weight & where you want to fly your drone, different rules may apply.

✅ In Sweden, drone regulation falls under Federal Office of Transport Agency of Sweden (TAS), & they can be contacted anytime via:

✅ Currently, there doesn't seem to be any restrictions on bringing drones within Sweden as long as your import is considered as legitimate (generally one drone per person).

🚨 Be aware of the airline you purchase to travel as some main ones will only accept your drone on-board if its batteries are detached & placed in a firecase during travel time. Most airlines will have a battery voltage limit based on the recommendation of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). You can find more info about a specific airline here.

💡 Smart! Get your drone batteries' firecase today and make sure you're complying with aviation safety rules.

Recreational & Commercial Drone use in Sweden

✅ Good things first, you will not need a license or permit to fly your drone in Sweden as long as you fly your drone within the permitted zones.

Within these, you will need to follow a few rules:

  • fly your drone at a maximum altitude of 120 m above the ground or 50 m within controlled zones & 10 m within military zones.

  • fly a drone that weights less than 7 kg (If heavier than 7 kg, you will need to register).

  • mark your drone with your full contact details.

  • fly your drone under a 2.4 or 5.8 GHz frequency only.

  • fly your drone always in sight (the use of 3D helmets is prohibited).

  • fly away from private property, animals, people & respect individuals' privacy.

  • fly at least 5 km away from airports & 1 km away from heliports. You must also give priority to all other categories of aircraft & if you see a plane or helicopter during your flight, land immediately your drone.

  • it is advised to subscribe to an insurance covering all risks.

  • do not fly near a natural disaster or somewhere emergencies will need to intervene.

  • if you're in an automatic flight mode, you must be able to take over control at any time.

  • if flying at night, your drone needs to be equipped with lights to be seen by all.

✅ If your drone weights more than 20 kg, you will need a third party insurance for a minimum amount of about 1 Million €. If the insurance policy does not refer to EC Regulation 785/2004, it should be noted that the insurance applies to drone flights.

✅ You can apply for a waiver on most of these rules via this link. Once completed, you can send you request to There is a cost which is based per quarter until the end of the current year (if you apply in July, you only pay for 6 months).

📸 if you wish to publish/use your photos or cameras for commercial or any other use than private, you should first ask permission to local authorities, you might do such via this link.

✅ Registrations are valid for life (of the drone).
